Hotaru - Fireflies

August 3, 2013 Jodi Sam

"Hotaru" or fireflies, are amazing little creatures that Mother Nature has given us.  The season for firefly watching is very short, only about 2 weeks and usually from the end of June to early July. Even in this period, they may not always be out.  The weather conditions have to be perfect, ideally having rained during the day, then stopped before the evening, so that heat can make the surrounding hot and humid.  The wild ones are even hard to come by these days.  We don't have fireflies in Vancouver, so I was always fascinated by them and begged to go see them in their nature habitat.

I was very fortunate to have witnessed this wondrous sight of wild "hotaru" flying about, back in July.  They were so beautiful! Though cannot say the same about the mosquito bites I got from that evening.
